Biarritz's most forgiving stretch of sand delivers mellow beach-break peaks just south of Le Rocher de la Plage, drawing longboarders and learners who want waves without the beatdown of the town's heavier breaks. NW to W swells in the 2-6ft range are the sweet spot, with E or SE winds grooming the faces. The northern end near the headland gets extra protection from northerlies and tends to stay cleaner when the rest of the beach turns messy. Fun walls run knee to shoulder high, and overhead-plus brings real punch to the peaks. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks to the south. Season: September to November. Consistency: reliable through autumn, crowded in summer. Beach disappears at high tide, so target low to three-quarter tide for the best shape. Stick to the northern end near the cliff base to find the most consistent walls and easiest water entry.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderately busy in autumn, genuinely hectic in July and August when surf schools and the general public swamp the beach. Weekdays are manageable, summer weekends are chaotic. The vibe is tolerant and welcoming by Southwest France standards, but bailed boards in a crowded lineup are a real hazard. Dawn patrol pays dividends in peak season.

Access & Facilities

Park at the cliff-top car park on Ave Beau Rivage and walk down the zigzag path. Beach parking is useless in summer. Biarritz has full infrastructure: water, food, and surf rentals within walking distance. Water quality is generally clean but can deteriorate after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Cote des Basques is maxed out or too crowded, Grande Plage and Marbella to the north handle more size and offer punchier beach-break peaks. Anglet's 11 beaches to the north are worth checking when a solid NW swell is running.
