A jetty-altered beach break at the mouth of the Adour River in Anglet, Southwest France, La Barre punches above its modest modern reputation when solid swell arrives. It needs at least 2m on the open beaches to produce rideable 1.5m surf here, and the best conditions stack up on a W to NW swell at low tide, with N or S winds offering protection thanks to the jetty geometry. The left-hand peaks are the main draw now, though rights still show up in the right swell window. Intermediates and up will get the most from the hollow, fast sections, when it is genuinely firing, the lineup can pack 50 or more surfers and attitudes can sharpen accordingly. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: low to moderate. Water quality is variable, so check reports before paddling out after heavy rain or river runoff.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Despite the post-jetty decline in wave quality, La Barre draws serious crowds on good days, sometimes 50-plus surfers in the water. Some locals can be unwelcoming, particularly to newcomers who do not read the room. Basic lineup etiquette and a respectful attitude go a long way. Weekday sessions in marginal swell are the quietest option.

Access & Facilities

La Barre sits at the southern end of Anglet, near the Adour River mouth. Parking and amenities are available in the Anglet beach zone nearby. Water quality can degrade after rainfall due to river runoff from the Adour, so check local pollution alerts before surfing.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Barre is too small or too crowded, the Anglet beach strip (Les Cavaliers, La Chambre d'Amour) offers multiple peaks a short ride north. Biarritz's town beaches and the exposed banks at Hossegor are within easy reach for different swell and wind conditions.
