Just south of Capbreton's harbour entrance, L'Estacade breaks alongside the wooden jetty where the rock dykes partially absorb incoming energy, producing smaller, more manageable right-hand waves than the exposed banks further down the coast. It favours west swell on east winds, performing best at mid to low tide. The sheltered position means it genuinely comes alive on bigger swells when open-beach spots nearby are closing out or maxing, making it a useful go-to when conditions elsewhere get too heavy. Rights are the dominant direction, generally walling rather than hollow. Beginners and intermediates make up most of the lineup, and the spot's proximity to central Capbreton keeps it accessible without a long walk or drive. Bottom: sand with rock dyke structure. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Watch the jetty and rock dykes on the takeoff and sweep, especially as tide drops and the structure becomes more exposed.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a mixed crowd of learners, improvers, and locals who know its value as a bailout option. Localism is low key, but the lineup can get busy when conditions elsewhere deteriorate and surfers migrate toward the calmer water. Dawn patrol is quieter. Give right of way to anyone deeper on the peak.

Access & Facilities

Central Capbreton is walkable from the waterfront. Parking, cafes, surf shops, and rentals are all close by. The wooden jetty provides a visual reference from the beach. Watch for the rock dyke structure at low tide and stay clear of the harbour channel. Water quality varies near the port entrance, especially after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

If L'Estacade is too small or too crowded, the Capbreton beach breaks to the south offer more exposure to open swell and a wider range of banks. Hossegor's La Graviere and Les Culs Nus are within a short drive for surfers ready to step up significantly in power and intensity.
