A powerful reef break on the Basque Coast that shifts from long-walling lefts into genuine big-wave territory on serious swells. Located off the harbour at Guethary, it starts firing at 5-6ft and holds well past 16ft, making it one of the most demanding waves in France. Optimal conditions are SW to NW swell with offshore winds from the SE or E, and it works across all tides though the character changes with each. The left is the main event on moderate days but becomes genuinely dangerous at size, depositing riders directly in the impact zone or onto sand. The inside section produces shorter, hollow waves that are worth knowing about. Weekdays see a relatively thin crowd, but weekends draw a packed lineup of capable locals who know this wave far better than visitors. Bottom: rocky reef. Season: autumn to winter. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Don't paddle out here on a big swell without a gun and solid big-wave experience, and take a low profile regardless of your level.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable with a small crew, but weekends bring a full, competitive lineup. The locals here are experienced and entitled to priority. Keep a low profile, wait your turn, and don't drop in. Visiting surfers who show respect and patience will generally find their place in the rotation.

Access & Facilities

Head to Guethary harbour. The break is visible on your right. The village has cafés and basic services. Parking near the harbour fills fast on weekends. Watch the entry and exit points carefully, especially in larger swells when the rocks and currents demand a precise plan.

Nearby Alternatives

If Guethary is too big or too crowded, Lafitenia to the south offers a longer, more forgiving right-hand point break. Biarritz and the Côte des Basques work on smaller swells and offer beach-break options when the reef is maxing out.
