A sheltered bay wave near the mouth of the Rivière Nivelle, Ciboure Socoa sits inside the Basque Country's swell shadow and only fires on the right combination of NW-to-N swell and SW wind. The submerged reef setup produces waves in the 1-8ft range, but consistency is genuinely low, a handful of viable sessions per year for the more localised Le Port reef specifically. Intermediates will find manageable peaks on smaller days near the Socoa Fort, though the rocks, murky estuary water, and tight access demand respect. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn-winter swells, Oct-Feb. Consistency: low. Book a session here only when the Basque coast is maxing out and the exposed beaches are unsurfable, this bay earns its keep as a refuge rather than a destination, and even then, don't expect clean water or an easy paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a crowd whenever conditions are marginal on the rest of the Basque coast, which is the only time this spot works. Localism is present, Le Port reef in particular is tight, hard to access, and territorial. Intermediates should stick to the softer peaks near the fort and leave the reef to those who know it. Dawn sessions reduce friction.

Access & Facilities

Paid carpark with roadside meters nearby. No facilities on site. Water quality is poor, the river Nivelle estuary runs close, and pollution is a real concern after rain. Rocks surround the lineup, so booties are worth considering even in summer. Avoid after heavy rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ciboure Socoa is too sheltered or too messy, Guéthary's reefs and the beachbreaks of Lafitenia and Biarritz handle a range of swells and directions. If the whole Basque coast is maxing, the long stretch of average beachbreak north of town offers a safer paddle-out than any of the reef options here.
