Capbreton punches hard for a French beachbreak, delivering some of the most hollow, powerful sandbank waves on the Landes coast, anchored by the notorious Bunkers section where steep drops feed into genuine barrels breaking close to shore. NW to W swells funnel in best, with E or ESE winds keeping faces clean. Low to mid tide at Bunkers is where the barrels live, high tide shifts it toward a vicious semi-closeout that bodyboarders love and shortboarders endure. Best size runs waist-high to double overhead, and September through November is peak season when autumn swells fire consistently. This is not a wave for the undecided: the lineup fills with chargers and pros when conditions align, so patience and competitive awareness are non-negotiable. Bottom: sandbank. Season: September to November. Consistency: reliable in autumn. Walk south from the main peak if you want quieter peaks with fewer eyes on every set.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

When Bunkers is on, expect a moderately crowded lineup that includes traveling pros and committed locals who know every section. The vibe is competitive but workable if you surf your level, wait your turn, and don't snake sets. Walking south opens up less-pressured peaks worth the extra five minutes on the sand.

Access & Facilities

A large car park and Aire de Camping-cars sit directly behind the dunes, well signposted from town. Water quality is generally clean but can degrade after heavy rain. Capbreton town has cafes, surf shops, and rentals within easy reach. Watch for rips between banks and the abrupt shallowness that makes wipeouts punishing.

Nearby Alternatives

Hostegor and La Graviere sit just north and offer similar swell exposure with their own shifting banks. When Capbreton is maxed out or blown out, Seignosse to the north often provides a slightly more sheltered option worth checking.
