A shifting sandbar setup along the exposed Atlantic face of the Cap Ferret peninsula, about an hour southwest of Bordeaux, where the Arcachon Bay inlet meets open ocean swell. Banks here pick up SW to NW groundswell cleanly, and offshore winds are easterly, which aligns well with the prevailing pattern during autumn and winter. Mid tide tends to produce the best shape. On a good day waves wall up to 50-150m, but most sessions are shorter punchy peaks. The break starts working around 3-4ft and can handle 8ft+, though rip currents intensify noticeably with size and make navigation tricky for less experienced surfers. It suits intermediates and above when the swell is up, beginners can find calmer patches in smaller conditions. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: moderate to good in swell season. Read the rips before paddling out, they run hard on this stretch of coast and have caught people out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet and a relaxed paddle-out is common. Weekends draw crowds from Bordeaux and surrounding towns, particularly in summer. Locals are generally easygoing and there is an established surf club on site. Atmosphere stays friendly as long as basic lineup etiquette is respected.

Access & Facilities

Drive from Bordeaux toward Cap Ferret, roughly one hour. Alternatively, cross the Arcachon Bay by ferry from Arcachon to reach the peninsula. Park before the dunes and do not block beach access tracks. Camping is plentiful in the area. The local surf club offers rentals and lessons. Note that portions of the beach operate as a naturist zone.

Nearby Alternatives

The entire Landes coast running south from here offers dozens of similar sandbar setups. Lacanau to the north is more developed with consistent banks. If Cap Ferret is blown out or the banks are poor, the stretch between Biscarrosse and Mimizan often holds better shape in S to SW swells.
