Belharra is one of Europe's most consequential big-wave reefs, a tow-in behemoth sitting 2km offshore from the Basque coast between Hendaye and Ciboure. It needs a minimum of 20ft of open-ocean swell before it even thinks about breaking, and most sessions involve faces in the 40-60ft range. Jet-ski or boat access only: there is no paddle option at working size. The left is the longer and more ridden wall, running up to 500m on exceptional swells, the right is shorter but equally powerful. The bottom sits roughly 15m deep at low tide, which tells you everything about the energy this wave focuses onto the reef. Both directions are fast, thick, and unforgiving. Bottom: Rocky reef. Season: November to February. Consistency: Extremely low, requires rare Nor'Atlantic swell events. If you need to ask whether you're ready for Belharra, you are not ready for Belharra.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is empty almost by definition. Only a small global cohort of big-wave specialists and elite tow teams sessions this break. There is no localism in the traditional sense, but there is strict hierarchy: tow teams coordinate to avoid ski collisions, and inexperienced operators in the impact zone are a genuine safety hazard to everyone present. Respect the water-safety protocols.

Access & Facilities

Jet-ski or rigid inflatable boat from Saint-Jean-de-Luz or Hendaye harbours. No shore break, no channel paddle, no walk-in option. A safety ski and experienced driver are non-negotiable. Bring your own water, food, and emergency kit. Coast Guard awareness is advisable on big-swell days. Water temps in winter sit around 13-15°C: full 5/4 or 6/5 with hood, gloves, and booties.

Nearby Alternatives

When Belharra isn't running, the Basque coast has plenty: Lafitenia offers long right-hand point waves for surfers at a more accessible scale, Guéthary's Parlementia handles solid NW groundswell well, and the beaches at Hossegor to the north fire on the same swell windows with shorter drives and no boat required.
