A long stretch of sand beach running through the heart of the Basque Coast, Anglet strings together a series of distinct peaks from Les Cavaliers in the north to VVF in the south, making it one of the most consistent beach breaks in Southwest France. NW and WNW swells are the engine here, working best at head-high to double overhead on a mid tide with an E wind. Les Cavaliers can handle a light NW, while VVF holds shape in a SW, so the beach stays surfable across a wider wind window than neighboring Hossegor. It suits all levels, but the more exposed peaks draw moderate crowds, and the water quality is regularly poor after rain. Bottom: sand. Season: October to February, but rideable year-round. Consistency: high. If the obvious peaks are packed, walk the beach and find a less contested sandbar before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The named peaks pull a crowd, particularly on good autumn and winter swells. Localism is described as chilly rather than hostile, and the beach is long enough to spread the load. Shoulder burn is real on pumping days. Dawn patrol in winter cuts through most of the pressure. Walk past the obvious entry points and crowds thin noticeably.

Access & Facilities

Multiple parking lots and beach access points run the length of Anglet, making getting in and out straightforward. The beach sits between Biarritz and Bayonne, with plenty of food and services nearby. Pollution is the main hazard: water quality is often dirty, particularly after heavy rain. Check local alerts before surfing if you're sensitive to water quality.

Nearby Alternatives

When Anglet is maxed out or too onshore, Biarritz's sheltered cove at La Grande Plage can offer a cleaner option in bigger SW swells. Hossegor to the north delivers heavier, more powerful barrels when the swell is solid and the wind is right.
