A groin-organized beachbreak at the southwest tip of Long Beach, West End punches above its modest reputation when the rest of Long Island maxes out. SE swell is the bread and butter, but this spot also handles NE swell and nor'easters, and the jetty layout can screen out N winds better than most New York beachbreaks nearby. Hollow lefts peel off the rocks at low tide, while mid and high tides produce peakier, more forgiving surf across the sandbar sections. Best size runs from knee-high to double overhead, with the groins organizing storm surf into something workable even when neighboring Lincoln Beach and Laurelton are a washing machine. Hurricane swells and nor'easters both switch it on, making the September through March window the most productive. Bottom: sand with jetty rock sections. Season: Sep-Mar. Consistency: moderate. Bring a 4/3 or thicker from October onward and budget for the metered parking lot.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays run quiet to moderate. Weekends and surf-school season crowd up fast. Long Beach has one of the hardest-core surf cultures on the East Coast, earned over decades. Respect the lineup order, don't snake sets, and the vibe stays manageable. Attitude here is not decorative.

Access & Facilities

Metered street and lot parking at the west end of Long Beach. Water quality passes tests the majority of the time but proximity to New York means post-storm runoff is a real variable. Debris and hypothermia are the listed hazards: scan the lineup before paddling out after storms, and dress for water temps that drop well below 10°C in winter.

Nearby Alternatives

Lincoln Beach and Laurelton, both to the east along Long Beach, face similar swell windows with more consistent sandbanks and active surf contest history when West End's groins aren't cooperating. On smaller, cleaner days with S or SW swell, scanning the other Long Beach jetty sections is worth the short drive.
