A jetty-assisted beach peak on the east end of Ponquogue Beach, The Bowl is Hampton Bays' most dependable go-to when the rest of Long Island's East End is closing out. It needs a solid SSE swell to wake up, ideally 3-8ft at mid tide with NW to NNW winds keeping faces clean. On average S-to-SSE days it handles a broad range of abilities, but when a legitimate hurricane swell pushes through, it becomes one of the few genuine big-wave spots on the entire New York coastline. The crowd is moderate most days, though locals here have a reputation for being territorial when conditions are good. Bottom: Sand with jetty influence. Season: September through March. Consistency: Medium. Don't show up on a big day without a proven big-wave paddling game and solid duck-dive mechanics.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The Bowl draws a regular Hampton Bays crew that has a known edge when the waves are good. Localism is real but manageable. Moderate crowds on decent days, heavier pressure on the rare firing day. Dawn patrol mitigates both. Respect the lineup, don't snake, and you'll be fine. Big days are not the moment to test local patience.

Access & Facilities

Take Ponquogue Bridge in Hampton Bays and follow Dune Road east to the end. Free parking. No facilities on site. Rip currents are the main hazard, particularly on larger swells. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Bowl is flat or maxed out, check other Ponquogue Beach peaks to the west for smaller, more forgiving conditions. On a strong NW swell, north-facing spots around the Hamptons may fire when the south-facing stretches are blown out or disorganized.
