A right-hand beachbreak just off the Eastern Shinnecock Inlet Jetty in Southampton, Flys is one of the better sandbar experiences on Long Island when a real swell shows up. It wants SSE swell, NW to NNW winds, and mid tide to do its thing, working best from waist-high up to well overhead. Access is the first challenge: the road terminates at a state park requiring a permit to drive in, parking passes cost serious money, and the coastal estates along this stretch block most public routes to the sand. If you're not local, expect to earn it. The sandbars shift constantly, and finding the right peak on any given day is genuinely difficult for someone who doesn't know the area. Intermediate to advanced surfers who manage the logistics will find punchy, fun rights peeling off a small regular crew. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The Hamptons crowd is real. A small, tight-knit local crew surfs Flys regularly, and while most are manageable, it can get heavy. The access difficulty naturally filters numbers, but don't mistake scarcity of other visitors for a warm reception. Be respectful, take your turns, and don't show up like you own the place.

Access & Facilities

The state park at the end of the road requires a drive-in permit, and parking passes in Southampton are expensive and often require prior booking well in advance. Come prepared. Water is clean overall, and the park offers camping and fishing, but reservations fill up far ahead of time. Getting lost is a legitimate hazard for anyone unfamiliar with the access routes.

Nearby Alternatives

When Flys isn't working or the permit situation is too much to deal with, the broader Hamptons coastline has other beach peaks that pick up similar SSE and S swells. Montauk at the eastern tip of Long Island offers more accessible beachbreak and point options across multiple skill levels when size is in the water.
