One of the better south-facing breaks on all of Long Island, Terrace delivers legitimate tubes off a sand-covered rock reef in Montauk, punching above its weight compared to the surrounding beach breaks. ESE to S swells are the trigger, with NW to NNW winds cleaning it up. Wave direction flips with swell angle: E swells produce mostly lefts, S swells favor rights. Low tide sharpens the reef's bite and produces the most hollow sections, while size can range from waist-high to overhead-plus. Hurricane season, September into fall, is prime. This is an all-levels spot on paper but the heavy lineup and shallow rock reef demand real competence. Bottom: sand-covered rock reef. Season: September through March. Consistency: reliable in hurricane season, can fire outside of it on the right swell. Booties are not optional: the entry is rocky, sharp, and will end your session before it starts if you skip them.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd pressure is real here. Terrace is well-known as one of the better waves on Long Island, and the lineup reflects it. Multiple peaks allow some spread, but the best section draws competition. Localism is rated moderate and described as doable. Respect the lineup, know your place in the rotation, and don't expect much hand-holding from the regulars.

Access & Facilities

Access is easy but requires a walk. Head to the beach on the main road and walk down the shore. The paddle-out uses a rip to pull you into the lineup, entering the water without booties over the sharp rocky bottom is a mistake you'll only make once. Sharks and seals are present in the Montauk area, so be aware.

Nearby Alternatives

Montauk has a cluster of breaks in close proximity, including several beach peaks that handle similar swell and offer more forgiving bottoms on smaller days. When Terrace is not quite firing, other south-facing spots along the Montauk stretch can provide more consistent rideable waves without the reef risk.
