A shifting sand-bar beach break on Long Island's south shore, Tobay sits between Jones Beach State Park and Gilgo Beach, punching above its weight when a solid swell lines up. Best conditions arrive with a SE to S groundswell from 3 to 6ft, offshore NW winds, and a low-to-mid tide that exposes the bars and lets the wave stand up properly. At high tide, especially in summer, the wave tends to go fat and mushy and is generally not worth the paddle. Crowds are light on weekdays, but this is a residents-only beach on weekends with a daily fee structure on weekdays, so check access before you drive out. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall, with September typically the standout month. Consistency: low to moderate. Sandbars shift constantly, so scout from the parking lot before paddling out and pick the peak that looks most defined that day.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday crowds are thin and the vibe is generally relaxed. Weekends draw more people but still stay manageable. There is a low-level territorial attitude from a small number of regulars, nothing heavy. Dawn sessions from 6 to 8:30am are reliably quiet and often free of the fee gate.

Access & Facilities

Reach the beach via Wantagh Parkway, Meadowbrook Parkway, or Robert Moses Causeway. Town of Oyster Bay residents surf free on weekends, non-residents pay a daily parking and access fee on weekdays. No alcohol on the beach. Surf school presence at the west end in summer means the east end is your target. Bring water and snacks as facilities are basic.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tobay is flat or the bars are off, Gilgo Beach immediately to the east often has a different sandbar configuration worth checking. Jones Beach State Park to the west picks up a similar swell and can be more consistent in certain windows.
