Ditch Plains is the most consistent stretch of surfable ocean on Long Island's East End, sitting just outside Montauk village on a mix of rock, reef, and sand. E, ESE, and SE swells are the bread and butter here, with NNW winds keeping things clean. Any tide works, and the break starts producing rideable waves under 1m and holds up past double overhead. It draws every level of surfer, from first-timers on foamies to experienced shortboarders threading the occasional hollow section, but make no mistake: this lineup is perpetually crowded, and the density alone is the primary hazard. Shifting A-frame peaks break over a rock-and-sand bottom, with a reefy left point adding character on the right swell. The best windows run September through March, when crowds thin slightly and swell frequency ticks up. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: year-round, best in fall and winter. Consistency: high. Arrive at first light on a weekday if you want a manageable lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd rated a near-perfect 9/5, and that is not an exaggeration. Summer turns this into a floating festival of longboards and beginners. Out-of-towners from New York City pile in on weekends from June through August. September through November offers the best compromise between swell quality and manageable crowds. Respect the lineup hierarchy and paddle wide. Localism is real but generally manageable if you conduct yourself properly.

Access & Facilities

Parking is off Ditch Plains Road, with a dedicated lot near the eastern jetty end. Town parking permits are required and expensive in summer. Lifeguards are present in peak season. Rocks in the eastern lineup require awareness. Water quality is clean. The Ditch Witch food truck operates seasonally for post-session calories.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ditch Plains is too chaotic, the stretch between here and Montauk Lighthouse has rockier reef setups that reward the walk and tend to hold smaller crowds. Further west along the South Shore, spots from East Hampton through Shinnecock offer beachbreak alternatives on SE swell, with the eastern jetties at Shinnecock worth checking when sand builds on the right angle.
