A submerged boulder reef tucked on the north side of Montauk Point, North Bar catches swell that buries every other Long Island break under onshore wind. When a solid E or wrapping SE swell hits and the SW wind blows offshore here, you get punchy, walled-up rights running down the line in clean conditions while the south-facing beaches are blown out. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers comfortable reading a reef-driven lineup with strong current. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: medium. Parking is inside Montauk Point State Park and fees apply on weekends and summer days, winter weekday visits are the move for an empty lot and heated restrooms that make wetsuit changes bearable. Crowds show up fast when the forecast aligns, so an early start matters.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Long Island lineups are competitive, and North Bar is no exception when it's one of the only clean options on the island. Weekends with a forecast-aligned swell bring a crowd quickly. Dawn patrol on weekdays in fall or winter gives you the best shot at space. Respect the local surfers who know this reef well.

Access & Facilities

Enter via Montauk Point State Park. Parking fees apply except on winter weekdays. Heated restrooms on site. The wave is visible from the lighthouse overlook to the left. Watch for jellyfish in summer and respect the current, it can be deceptively strong from the channel.

Nearby Alternatives

If North Bar is too small or the swell angle isn't wrapping, the south-side Montauk beaches handle SE swell more directly and offer a wider range of conditions. Ditch Plains nearby is a reliable option for smaller, more forgiving surf with multiple sandbars.
