A fickle but occasionally spectacular right-hand wedge breaks off the jetty at West End, Jones Beach, on Long Island's south shore. It needs SE to E swell, NNW to NNE winds, and low-to-mid tide to show its best face, producing fast right wedges in the waist-high to well-overhead range that can resemble Sebastian Inlet on a good day. The locals are wired to it and protective, especially when real surf arrives, so expect competition for the better waves. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: highly fickle, capable of shutting down for years then firing for one standout season. The jetty reconstruction scrambled the sandbar, so treat any session here as a bonus rather than a plan.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Most days the crowd is manageable, but when the wedge is firing the local pecking order asserts itself fast. The community is small, tight, and has the lineup dialed. Show respect, don't drop in, and don't crowd the peak. Dawn patrol on a weekday session is the obvious play.

Access & Facilities

Park in the large lot at the West End section of Jones Beach State Park. There is a walk to the water, so pack accordingly. Facilities including restrooms and concessions are available seasonally. Watch for rip currents running alongside the jetty and be aware the sand bottom can be shallow on the wedge.

Nearby Alternatives

If West End is flat or too crowded, Long Beach and Lido Beach both offer consistent beach break peaks a short drive west. Robert Moses State Park to the east has its own jetty setup that can produce similar wedge conditions when swell is in the water.
