South-facing Long Island beachbreak that fires with the slightest SE swell, putting consistent peaks within a straight shot of central Long Island. Best from waist-high to well overhead on a SE swell, NW to NNW winds keep it clean, and mid tide generally organizes the banks best. Sandbars shift constantly, so the wave you surfed last week may have vanished by the weekend. All ability levels can find something here depending on size, though crowds build fast on weekends and summer swimming restrictions push surfers into designated zones from roughly 8am until late afternoon. Bottom: Sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: Moderate, picks up any SE energy. Check which field is open for surfing when you arrive, as it rotates by day. Democrat Point, far to the right, can produce wedging lefts off the jetty when a proper swell fills in, worth the walk if the main stretch is walled or packed.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are moderate, weekends become ultra-crowded, especially in summer. The local vibe is welcoming and mellow, no heavy localism. Summer surfing is restricted to designated zones during swim hours. Dawn patrol and evening sessions after swimmers clear are the moves in warm months. Fall through spring the beach is essentially yours.

Access & Facilities

Parking is plentiful across multiple fields accessible via the Robert Moses Causeway. Ask attendants which field is designated for surfing that day. Rick's Action Sports is the local shop for gear and current conditions. Rip currents are the main hazard, particularly around Democrat Point where the lagoon corner creates strong pulls.

Nearby Alternatives

If Robert Moses is blown out or maxed, the barrier island chain west toward Jones Beach offers similar sand-bottom peaks with slightly different swell exposure. On big NE swells, spots along the South Shore can pick up more energy when Moses is too small.
