Gilgo sits on a sparsely populated barrier island a couple of miles east of Jones Beach, carrying more surfing history than its mellow vibe suggests. SE, SSE, and S swells are the move here, with NW to NNW winds cleaning things up nicely. Works best at low to mid tide, when the sandbars organize and the peaks can get genuinely hollow on bigger days. All skill levels can find something from waist-high to well overhead, though crowds build hard in summer, especially on weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate, with better shape than nearby beaches on an east swell. Pack a fish or a shortboard for the small-to-mid range days, and a step-up when the bigger S swells push through in fall and winter.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe in the water is welcoming and mellow. Summer weekends bring heavy crowds, especially from non-surfers sharing the beach. Fall through early spring the lineups thin out considerably, which is also when the waves are at their best. Dawn patrol in the shoulder season is the smart play.

Access & Facilities

Drive Ocean Parkway east from Jones Beach and follow signs to Gilgo Beach. Parking lot is on the bay side. Summer parking fees apply daily from roughly 7am to 6pm unless you hold a Town of Babylon recreational permit. Facilities are basic: expect seasonal restrooms and limited services outside summer.

Nearby Alternatives

When Gilgo is maxed out or blown out, the rest of the Long Island South Shore barrier island chain offers similar sandbars at varying exposures. Jones Beach to the west handles bigger swells with a different angle, and spots further east pick up swell more directly on northerly hurricanes and major Atlantic storms.
