Right · ReefIntermediate2–6 ftJan – Dec

A submerged boulder reef tucked along the Montauk stretch of Long Island's South Fork, Fortress produces fun, walled-up sections that favor rights on a SE swell. It works across all tides and stays reasonably consistent through fall and winter, picking up E through SW swell in the 2-8ft range. The reef adds some shape to what would otherwise be a forgettable stretch of sand, but it won't handle much size before things go soft and sectiony. Intermediate surfers will find it rewarding on smaller days, though the local grommet crew claims it early and the town car park fills fast with permit holders, making access a genuine headache without one. Bottom: submerged reef over sand. Season: fall through early winter. Consistency: high. Dawn patrol is your best shot at scoring uncrowded waves before the car park gates close out visiting surfers.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are a consistent issue here. A tight-knit local grommet crew surfs Fortress regularly, and the permit-only parking situation means visiting surfers often can't even reach the lineup. Arrive early, be respectful in the water, and don't expect priority in the lineup as an out-of-towner.

Access & Facilities

Parking requires a town permit, the car park fills quickly and non-permit vehicles get shut out. Lifeguard coverage is available seasonally. The area is relatively underdeveloped for facilities, but basic amenities are present. No major pollution or hazard concerns flagged, though the boulder reef warrants awareness on low-light sessions.

Nearby Alternatives

Montauk Point offers a classic righthand pointbreak that handles double-overhead SE swell with far more power and length. Further west, the Montauk beachbreak stretches offer wider swell windows and shifting sandbars when Fortress is maxed or overrun.
