Hollow, punchy beach break peaks define East Hampton's Main Beach, sitting at the eastern end of Long Island's Hamptons stretch. SE, SSE, and S swells push through cleanest from September through March, with NW to NNW winds grooming the faces. Mid tide is the sweet spot. Size range is waist-high to well overhead, and when the banks align, expect legitimate barreling lefts and rights with genuine board-breaking power. Access is the main friction point: parking permits are strictly enforced in summer, and much of the surrounding shoreline is blocked by private homes and beach clubs. Come autumn or winter when the crowds thin out. The summer celebrity circus raises prices and fills parking lots, but from September onward the lineups stay surprisingly mellow and localism is minimal. Bottom is sand throughout. Season peaks fall through early spring. Consistency improves markedly when long-period S or SE groundswell arrives. Pack a 4/3 or heavier for winter sessions and check the rip current situation before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is moderate and manageable. Summer brings tourist volumes that clog parking and fill the beach, but the lineup itself stays relatively low-key. The real crowd pressure is logistical, not aggressive. September through March is the window where you get better swell, cleaner conditions, and noticeably fewer people competing for waves.

Access & Facilities

Parking permits are required in summer and strictly enforced. Many surrounding beaches are blocked by private property, making Main Beach one of the more accessible entry points in the area. Facilities exist near the main beach access but scale back off-season. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

The Hamptons coastline from West Hampton to Amagansett holds multiple beach break peaks that respond similarly to the same SE and S swells. If Main Beach is blown out or the banks are poor, neighboring stretches of the same coastline often offer comparable or better setups on any given swell, so a short drive east or west is usually worth the scout.
