Jetty-sheltered beachbreak on the western end of Westhampton barrier island, Cupsogue handles NW-to-W winds better than almost any other Long Island spot in this stretch. The inlet jetty blocks westerly chop while multiple wave-shaping groins along the Westhampton shoreline produce defined peaks for both rights and lefts. SE swell is the priority, though the window opens all the way from E through SW, and the break starts firing from knee-high and holds into well-overhead territory. Suitable for all skill levels when it's small, though larger swells demand solid intermediate ability to manage stronger rip currents and heavier sections near the jetty. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: high. On summer weekends the lot fills early and the water gets busy fast, so dawn patrol is your best call.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is moderate and manageable, but weekends during summer bring ultra-crowded conditions. Parking fills quickly in the county lot. Walking a few hundred meters up the beach away from the jetty almost always opens up emptier peaks. Local vibe is generally doable if you're respectful.

Access & Facilities

Dune Road west to the Cupsogue Beach County Park lot. Lifeguards on duty in season. Summer parking requires a Suffolk County permit or a fee. 4WD beach access is available for permit holders. No major hazards beyond crowds and standard rip currents near the inlets.

Nearby Alternatives

Shinnecock Inlet jetties to the west offer a similar jetty-influenced setup and are worth checking on the same swell. Fire Island's Democrat Point at the eastern tip of Fire Island catches a similar SE-to-SW window and has easier access for NYC-based surfers.
