Rockaway's 30th-39th Streets stretch delivers genuine hollow beachbreak that punches above its weight when fall and winter swells push in from the SE, ESE, or E. Remnant pilings and rock from pre-Sandy infrastructure still lurk beneath the sand at lower tides, producing steep, occasionally barreling peaks across a wide section of beach. NNW to NNE winds groom the faces, and the spot holds those offshore conditions better than most nearby options on Long Island. Best size runs waist-high to well overhead, with low-to-mid tide generally producing the sharpest lips. Strong rip currents run hard during bigger swells, so read the lineup before paddling out. Bottom: sand over scattered debris. Season: September through March. Consistency: reliable when the Atlantic switches on. Any ability level can find something here, though beginners should steer clear of the bigger, faster peaks and those subsurface hazards.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is notably mellow for a New York City surf break. Local vibe is welcoming, and shoulder burn is light most sessions. Weekday dawns in fall and winter give you the best chance at empty peaks. Summer brings more bodies in the water, though far fewer serious surfers.

Access & Facilities

Street parking runs along the Rockaway beachfront with relatively easy access to the sand. The boardwalk provides a useful observation platform before you paddle out. Restrooms and outdoor showers are available seasonally. Water quality is generally clean, though avoid surfing within 72 hours of heavy rain events, standard Northeast advisory.

Nearby Alternatives

When this stretch goes flat or the swell angle misses, the rest of the Rockaways beach continues northwest and southeast with similar beachbreak setups. Long Beach and Jones Beach pick up more ESE swell if Rockaway feels small, and both offer comparable sand-bottom peaks with their own crowd dynamics.
