A powerful sandbar break near the village of Meddawatta on Sri Lanka's southwestern tip, Matara delivers long, punchy walls well away from the circus of Hikkaduwa and Midigama. It needs a solid SW swell to get going, typically 5ft-plus at the sandbar, and holds up through bigger swells in the 12ft-plus range. Offshore winds from the NE keep faces clean during the Nov-Apr season, with February historically producing the best combinations of swell and wind. The beach is rarely crowded, and locals are genuinely welcoming rather than territorial. Bottom: sandbar. Season: Nov-Apr. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Paddle out when the bank is forming well and the tide is pushing through, because the shape shifts noticeably as the sandbar moves. All tide levels can work here, but scouting conditions from the beach before paddling out is smart when it's bigger.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowds are both reported as light, a sharp contrast to the busier breaks up the coast. The local crew is friendly and a solid source of up-to-date info on bank conditions. Respect goes a long way here. Keep the lineup respectful and you'll have little to worry about.

Access & Facilities

The break is roughly 2km from Matara's main bus station, making it easy to reach by tuk-tuk or on foot. Several guesthouses sit close to the beach, including accommodation options that cater specifically to surfers. Food and basics are available locally without needing to travel far. No known serious hazards beyond standard big-swell paddle-outs.

Nearby Alternatives

If Matara is too big or too small, Midigama and the reef setups further northwest along the A2 coast offer different swell exposures and can be surfable when this sandbar is off. Hikkaduwa is further up the coast and more developed, with consistent beginner-to-intermediate options when the swell window aligns.
