A warm, consistent coral reef break in southwestern Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa sits roughly 3 km south of the main station in the Wewala area, about 50m offshore from a strip of guesthouses. SW swells drive the action here, with the wave working from under 1ft up to the occasional 4-5ft day, though 2-3ft is the reliable daily reality. All tides produce rideable waves, and offshore winds clean it up nicely. The setup suits beginners through intermediates, but expect a packed lineup: crowds run from dawn to dusk on weekdays and escalate hard on weekends. Bottom: coral reef. Season: SW swell season peaks Apr-Nov. Consistency: high at small size. The reef is shallow at low tide, so check conditions before paddling out on a dropping tide and protect your feet.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the most heavily trafficked lineups in Sri Lanka. Dawn-to-dusk crowds are standard, weekends are ultra crowded. Local surfers are a regular presence and the zone has a tight community vibe. Respect goes a long way: wait your turn, don't snake, and acknowledge the locals who surf here every day. A small surf shop called A-Frame sits on the beach and is a good spot to get dings repaired and read the room.

Access & Facilities

Bus, train, or car from Colombo or Galle all drop you close. The break is near Wewala, about 3 km south of the main Hikkaduwa station. Guesthouses line the beachfront directly in front of the peak, and food options are plentiful. Water is ultra-warm year-round. The coral bottom is the main hazard: booties are worth considering for less experienced surfers navigating the reef.

Nearby Alternatives

Galle and Unawatuna offer different setups a short drive north or east when Hikkaduwa is maxed out or unrideable. Midigama, about 20 km south, has more reef options including a better-quality left that handles larger swells with less crowd pressure.
