A punchy reef break on Sri Lanka's SW coast, Main Point in Hikkaduwa delivers powerful, head-high to double-overhead walls when the Indian Ocean swell lines up. It needs SW to W swell from 2ft upward, works best at low to mid tide, and appreciates light offshore winds from the NE during the November to April dry season. The wave fires left and right off a coral reef, with the better runs on good days stretching 150 to 300m. Experienced surfers will get the most out of it, intermediates can manage on smaller, cleaner days. Bottom: coral reef. Season: Nov to Apr. Consistency: fickle, size and tide-dependent. Come at dawn on weekdays when the lineup can be nearly empty, because weekends see ultra-crowded conditions that will frustrate anyone expecting space. The reef is shallow at low tide, especially off season, so booties are worth considering and a wipeout onto coral is a real risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekend crowds are intense. Community reports flag it as far too busy, and the honest advice from local surfers is that Midigama or Arugam Bay offer better waves with less competition. Localism is present but not extreme. If you're visiting on a weekend, adjust expectations or get in the water before sunrise.

Access & Facilities

Hikkaduwa is a well-established surf town on the Galle Road south of Negombo. Accommodation, food, and board rentals are easy to find nearby. The break sits in the southern end of town. Water quality in Hikkaduwa can be inconsistent given the volume of tourism development along this stretch of coast.

Nearby Alternatives

When Main Point is crowded or off, Midigama just to the south offers reef and point options with reportedly better waves and fewer surfers. For a longer commitment, Arugam Bay on the east coast is widely regarded as the superior destination when the east coast season (May to Oct) is running.
