Unawatuna sits inside a crescent bay on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, offering gentle peaks that break over a mixed sand-and-reef bottom. SW swells from November through April funnel into the bay and produce short, soft rides, typically maxing out around 3ft before the wave loses shape. NE offshores keep things clean through the dry season. The lineup is mellow enough for beginners learning to stand up, and intermediate surfers can find steeper sections on the reef peaks at low-to-mid tide, though rides rarely push past 50m. Bottom: mixed sand and coral reef. Season: November to April. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent within the bay's exposure window. Note that harbour construction on the right side of the bay has reportedly altered the break's shape in recent years, so conditions may differ from older trip reports.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays and weekends alike see only a handful of surfers in the water, which makes it one of the more relaxed lineups on the south coast. The low localism pressure is a genuine advantage for beginners. That said, the beach draws tourists year-round, so expect non-surfers and swimmers sharing the break zone, particularly in the shallower inside sections.

Access & Facilities

Unawatuna town is roughly 5km south of Galle, easily reached by tuk-tuk or bus. The beach has ample guesthouses, warung-style food stalls, and board rentals along the beachfront road. Water quality can suffer near the bay's edges, particularly after heavy rain. Watch for shallow coral patches on the reef sections at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When Unawatuna is flat or the harbour construction has killed the shape, Midigama and Weligama, both within 20km to the east, offer more reliable reef and bay breaks across a wider swell window. Hikkaduwa to the north is another option for SW swells and has a more established surf infrastructure.
