A mellow, crumbly beach break fronting the Sunbeach Hotel in Wewala/Narigama, just south of Hikkaduwa town, this wave is one of Sri Lanka's most accessible entry points for new surfers. It picks up SW swells from November through March, with NE offshore winds keeping faces clean during the island's dry northeast monsoon window. Ideal size runs 2-5ft, where the sand bottom produces forgiving, slow-peeling waves with plenty of time to find your feet. Beginners dominate the lineup, though the wave is gentle enough that all levels will find it uncrowded and low-pressure most sessions. Bottom: sand. Season: November to March. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent but reliable during peak season. Rent a foam board from one of the guesthouses along the strip rather than bringing a performance shortboard. The channel is easy to navigate, but watch for other learners paddling in unpredictable directions during busy afternoons.
This is a beginner-heavy stretch with surf schools running lessons most mornings from November to March. Localism is essentially nonexistent, but the water gets busy with students on foam boards, so give wide berth and pick your moment. Dawn sessions are noticeably quieter.
Garalle Road runs directly behind the beach. Parking is straightforward along the strip. Board rentals, lessons, guesthouses, and cheap eats are all within walking distance. Water quality is generally acceptable but can dip after heavy rain.
If Sunbeach is too small or too crowded with students, the main Hikkaduwa reef break a short walk north offers more punch on the same SW swell. Buthawa, a few kilometres south, provides a quieter beach break option when the Hikkaduwa corridor gets busy.
