A west-facing beach break south of Carrapateira village, Praia do Amado punches above its class on its day, offering multiple shifting peaks across a wide sandy bay backed by impressive cliffs. SW to NW swell is the sweet spot, with E winds keeping faces clean, low to mid tide generally produces the best shape. The bay's headland provides more shelter from N winds than neighbouring Bordeira to the north, meaning it holds form when other spots are blown out. Works from waist-high up to a solid overhead and beyond, but bigger swells can overpower the banks and shut everything down. All ability levels can find something here, though the concentrated peaks and heavy surf school presence make the lineup genuinely busy from late spring through summer. Bottom: sand. Season: March through November, with December to February often producing the best quality swell. Consistency: high. Avoid weekend mornings in July and August unless you enjoy negotiating longboards and beginners launched into your take-off zone.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is Algarve surf school central. Mornings in summer mean crowded lineups with mixed-ability surfers and boards drifting everywhere. Vibe is generally welcoming and energetic rather than heavy. Dawn patrol or late-afternoon sessions in shoulder season are your best bet for uncrowded peaks. Respect the learners but stay sharp about what's in the water around you.

Access & Facilities

Large car park at the north end of the bay. Easy access, popular with campervans. Beach bars on site. Surf school and equipment rental available. No significant water quality concerns. Rips can develop when the swell pushes above 6ft, so read the beach before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Amado is maxed out or swamped with beginners, Praia da Bordeira to the north offers longer stretches of beachbreak with more room to spread out. For a completely different experience, the right pointbreak at Arrifana is one of the standout waves on this stretch of coast and worth checking whenever SW-NW swell is running.
