Left · BeachIntermediate → Advanced3–8 ftJan – Dec

A wedgy, refracting left breaks off the breakwater at the harbour end of this long Algarve beach, producing one of the more reliable barrels on this stretch of coast. NW, W, or SW swells collide with the jetty and jack up into a peak that can double in size before reeling away as a fast, shallow lefthander. Best from waist high to double overhead, with NW, N, or NE offshores holding the face clean. It suits experienced surfers who can handle speed and consequence: the wave breaks fast, heavy, and shallow over sand, and the lineup gets competitive on good days. Bottom: sand. Season: December to February peaks, but workable through winter. Consistency: moderate. The channel beside the breakwater makes paddling out manageable, but position yourself early on sets or the wedge will punish hesitation.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The beach itself draws large numbers of sunseekers in summer, but the wave at the breakwater is a focused peak that concentrates surfers and bodyboarders into a tight zone. On good winter swells expect a competitive lineup. Localism is described as doable but the vibe turns sharper when it's firing. Dawn patrol in winter gives you the best shot at uncrowded barrels.

Access & Facilities

Small parking area adjacent to the breakwater. The paddle-out is straightforward via the channel alongside the jetty. Water quality is generally clean but can deteriorate after heavy rain due to harbour run-off, so check after storms before paddling.

Nearby Alternatives

When the wedge is maxed out or blown out, the broader Falesia beach stretches east and can offer more forgiving beach peaks on smaller swells. Olhos de Água and the beach breaks around Albufeira are within a short drive and can offer different exposures when the harbour end isn't cooperating.
