A left-hand point tucked into the far southwest corner of the Algarve, Ponta Ruiva delivers long, walling lefts over shallow rock and boulder reef that transform from cruisy mid-length runners into speeding double-overhead walls when the swell fills in. It needs a solid NW, W, or SW swell to fire properly, with SE winds keeping the face clean. All tides can work, though mid tide is often preferred as the rocks get exposed at low. The left is the headline act, but a fast hollow right peaks in the middle of the beach and reels into the channel when conditions align. Bottom: rock and sand reef. Season: September to May. Consistency: medium, and users report it frequently flat or unsatisfying despite the trek. Plan around confirmed swell, bring fish or mid-length for smaller days, and a step-up when it doubles overhead. Road access is rough and car-park space is limited.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Once a secret, it is well known now. Expect a competitive, moderate crowd whenever swell is running, including surf schools, travelling surfers, and locals who protect the lineup. The take-off on the point is tight and positional. Get there early, surf with manners, and respect the fact that locals know this wave better than you do.

Access & Facilities

A long dirt track off the Beliche road leads down to a small cliff-top car park that fills quickly. Overflow parking exists on the road down. The descent to the beach is steep and rough. No facilities at the break. The roads are genuinely hard on hire cars. Carry water and food. Factor in extra time to find the spot on your first visit.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ponta Ruiva is flat or maxed out, Arrifana to the north offers a more consistent right-hand point that is widely regarded as one of the region's best options. Carrapateira area beaches provide more wind shelter in N winds. Sagres beaches pick up more S swell when the point is not showing.
