Praia do Burgau is a compact Algarve fishing village beach about 15 minutes west of Lagos, delivering mellow lefts and rights on sand that suit beginners most of the year. NW swells in winter are the primary driver, pushing 2-5ft waves into the sheltered bay, rare S swells in summer can also light it up briefly. The wave stays gentle the majority of the time, though a solid winter groundswell can bump up the fun factor enough to pull intermediate surfers off the main Lagos breaks. Crowds are light by Algarve standards, with fewer traveling surfers making the trip out here compared to Meia Praia or Zavial. Bottom: sand. Season: Nov through Feb for best consistency. Consistency: low to moderate. If Burgau is maxing out or going flat, Zavial is a short drive west and handles bigger, cleaner NW swell with more shape.
Burgau attracts mainly beginners, families, and day-trippers from Lagos. The vibe is relaxed and the lineup rarely competitive. Localism is not a concern. Respect other learners in the water, particularly families with young children who use the beach heavily in summer.
Park in the village above the beach and walk down the short path to the sand. The village has cafes, a handful of restaurants, and small shops. No dedicated surf school or rental shop on-site, so bring your own equipment. Water quality is generally good in winter, summer crowds increase beach use.
When Burgau is flat or too small, Meia Praia near Lagos picks up more swell and offers a longer stretch of beach to hunt peaks. Zavial, 10 minutes further west toward Sagres, is the regional standout for clean NW swell with better shape and holds more size.
