Punchy, shifting A-frame peaks define Castelejo, a west-facing beachbreak on the Algarve's exposed southwest tip near Vila do Bispo. It picks up virtually any swell direction from SW through N, with W and SW groundswells producing the best shape, and stays clean with E or NE wind. Mid tide tends to sharpen the peaks, though the break functions at all stages. Sandbars are typically at their best in autumn after summer rebuilding, with the period from October through May delivering the most consistent surf. Beginners and intermediates can work the main peaks comfortably up to head-high, anything from 6ft up is strictly advanced territory due to rips that intensify as swell rises, plus submerged rocks at the beach margins. The beach draws surf schools throughout summer, and weekends can get genuinely crowded at the central peak. Bottom: sand with rocky patches. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: high. Paddle wide of the main peak on busy days to find uncrowded peaks with room to breathe.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer brings surf schools, English tourists, and a competitive central peak. Weekend sessions in peak season can feel crowded. Localism is generally manageable but local bodyboarders are protective of the better banks. Dawn patrol in autumn or a midweek session dramatically improves your experience. Respect the lineup priority and you'll be fine.

Access & Facilities

Drive through Vila do Bispo and follow signs to Praia do Castelejo. At the junction, take the sealed road left and follow it to the beachfront car park. No permanent beach facilities, though a seasonal restaurant nearby has basic food and drinks. Water quality is clean. Bring everything you need including water, as facilities are minimal outside peak summer.

Nearby Alternatives

If Castelejo is blown out or maxed, Cordoama sits just to the north past a rocky outcrop and can offer more shelter or different swell angle. Carrapateira's Bordeira beach to the north is a long, isolated stretch that handles bigger N swells and has more wind protection from the north. Sagres-area beaches to the south are worth checking if a hefty NW or S-SW swell is running.
