Tonel sits at the base of sheer cliffs below Sagres Fort, catching W, NW and SW swells with rare consistency for the Algarve. Optimal conditions arrive with a NE or straight-E offshore, low to mid tide, and a solid W/NW groundswell pushing 4-8ft through well-defined a-frame peaks. Beginners can find their feet on smaller days, but when size builds the hollow, punchy lefts and rights demand experienced reading of shifting peaks, submerged rock patches inside, and active rip currents across the sand. Bottom: sand with scattered rocks. Season: October to April. Consistency: high year-round, strongest in autumn and winter. Bring a fish or step-up depending on swell size, and watch the tide closely as the rock hazard tightens at low water. High season (June to September) sees 50-70 people in the water including surf school groups, so dawn patrol or shoulder months are your best shot at a manageable lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowd most of the year, heavy June through September when surf schools inflate numbers significantly. The local crew is active but generally mellow, a mix of native surfers and long-term transplants. Respect the lineup, read priority, and you will be fine. Dawn sessions dramatically reduce the headcount.

Access & Facilities

Cliffside car park above the beach, walk down from there. Town is close, with surf shops, food, showers and lifeguard cover in season. Camping is available nearby. Water quality is clean despite the adjacent fishing port.

Nearby Alternatives

When Tonel is maxed out or blown out, the south Algarve coast turns the corner quickly and offers calmer options a short drive east. On bigger W swells, the Sagres area right-hand options and sheltered south-facing bays come into play for those who know them.
