A wave-starved corner of the Algarve coast, Mareta sits inside the sheltered bay at Sagres and needs genuine size to get going. It requires a big NW swell to wrap around the headland or a direct S to SW push, working best at 2-8ft, low to mid tide, with NE or N offshore winds. forecast services marks it as a reliable fallback when the exposed west coast beaches are maxed out and blown out, producing peaks along the beach that throw up fast, hollow right-hand wedges off the cliff end plus fun walls further down. It suits all abilities when small, but the lack of channels as size builds adds a shoulder-burning paddle-out for intermediates and up. Bottom: sand. Season: December to February core, extending to November and March. Consistency: low overall but reliable as a bailout option. Check the swell forecast carefully and bring a step-up if the NW is running overhead-plus elsewhere.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a crowded lineup in winter, particularly December through February, when other Sagres and west coast breaks are maxed or onshore. It can get hassly when busy. The vibe is doable but not relaxed. Dawn patrol sessions during mid-week swells are the practical call if you want elbow room.

Access & Facilities

Parking overlooks the beach directly. Camping is available nearby. The town of Sagres is close, with food and water easy to sort. No major pollution concerns. Watch for rips when the swell builds past head high, channels are not always obvious.

Nearby Alternatives

Tonel, just around the headland, is the first call in the Sagres area when conditions align. Beliche offers a more sheltered option on big NW swells. If Mareta is flat, the exposed beaches further north up the west coast toward Carrapateira will likely be active.
