Monte Clérigo is a spacious north-facing beachbreak on the Algarve's west coast, backed by one of the few fishing villages directly fronting this stretch of coastline. NW swell is the primary driver, with W swell also working. East winds are ideal, southerlies are tolerable in moderation, but the prevalent northerlies close it out quickly. Rising-to-mid tide produces the best shape across the multiple peaks and shifting banks. Best from waist-high to overhead, the break doesn't hold much size and loses quality when it gets big. Intermediates will feel at home here, with enough swell frequency to keep the banks honest through summer and peak power in the October-to-March window. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, best Oct-Mar. Consistency: high. Spread out along the beach to find emptier peaks and often better shape away from the main access point.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Proximity to Praia do Amado, the region's most consistent and crowd-heavy break, is Monte Clérigo's biggest advantage. Surf schools and regular crowds funnel down the road to Amado, leaving this beach comparatively quiet. The main access peak gets competitive on clean days, so walk a few minutes in either direction for breathing room. The vibe is mellow and family-friendly overall.

Access & Facilities

Beachside parking and a short walk make access as easy as it gets. The adjacent fishing village adds rare character to this stretch of coast. Water quality is excellent, recognized with a Quercus Golden Quality Beach award. Rip currents exist but are rarely a serious issue when conditions are genuinely surfable. Pack your own water and snacks if you plan a full day.

Nearby Alternatives

When Monte Clérigo is blown out by northerlies or too big to hold shape, Praia do Amado a few kilometres south is the go-to, though expect more company. Arrifana, further down the coast, offers a sheltered point setup that handles different wind and swell angles.
