A sheltered bay near Lagos in the western Algarve, Praia Da Luz offers a rare combination of beachbreak peaks and two flanking pointbreaks that come alive on the right swell. The right point at the western edge breaks over a sloping reef producing long, fast walls, while the left at the eastern edge is shallower and more demanding. Both points need a big NW, W, or clean SW swell to fire, the rivermouth bank in the middle produces fun, smaller waves but can carry pollution after heavy rain. Works through all tides, best waist-high to overhead, and suits most ability levels when the beach is running. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: December to February. Consistency: medium. A car park sits at the centre of the bay, making access straightforward, but note the points break over rocks so rock-shoes and a careful entry are worth the minor inconvenience.
Usually quiet, but the lineup tightens noticeably when the points are firing. Localism is rated doable with a competitive edge on good days. Respect priority and give the rocks their space. Dawn patrol in winter avoids the worst of any crowds.
A car park sits directly at the beach in the centre of the bay. Praia Da Luz is a developed tourist resort with camping, restaurants, and rentals close by. Water quality is generally clean but can degrade after rain due to the rivermouth.
Lagos town beach can produce fun, hollow waves on big S storms and is worth a check when Luz is too small or onshore. Meia Praia to the east offers a long stretch of beachbreak peaks on NW swells. Sagres beaches to the southwest pick up more swell when the Algarve coast is starved.
