Carrapateira delivers one of the Algarve's most versatile beach setups, stretching along a wide, exposed Atlantic-facing bay on Portugal's southwest coast. A semi-point at the southern end lines up best on NW, W, or SW swells from low to mid tide on the push, producing long, walling rides that can run well on the right sandbank. As the tide fills in, a rivermouth section switches on with hollow, punchy rights worth hunting. The massive beach running north holds sandbanks all the way along that pick up any swell from 3ft to overhead-plus, rewarding those willing to walk. SE or E winds keep it clean. Best months run September through May when Atlantic groundswells are most consistent. Bottom is sand throughout, with rocks in front of the southern point. Rips can be significant, especially near the rivermouth, so read the water carefully before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The southern point draws the bulk of surfers and can get genuinely busy on weekends. Walk 200m or more up the beach and you will often have peaks to yourself, even on busy days. The local vibe is welcoming and chilled. Respect the lineup at the point, avoid the rookie mistake of paddling straight to the peak without reading who is already out.

Access & Facilities

Park at the clifftop car park at the southern end of the beach. The village of Carrapateira is immediately adjacent with basic amenities. Water quality is clean. Watch for rocks directly in front of the point and treat the rivermouth area with caution: rips can be heavy and the current moves a lot of water.

Nearby Alternatives

When Carrapateira is blown out or maxed, Arrifana to the north offers a more sheltered point break that handles onshore winds better. Praia do Amado, a short drive away, is a similarly exposed beach break with consistent peaks and a surf school presence for mixed-ability groups.
