A top-tier right-hand point anchors Arrifana's northern headland, delivering long, fast walls that unload over a boulder-strewn reef beneath dramatic cliffs on Portugal's Algarve coast. The point needs NW to W swell, minimum 6ft, to clear the rocks and line up properly, holding cleanly through double overhead and beyond with E or NE winds offshore. Low to mid tide is optimal. This is a serious wave for experienced surfers: the take-off drops in front of a large gnarly rock, shallow boils appear along the ride, and two chunky boulders lurk on the inside. The beach gets a moderate crowd year-round, the point is more focused and competitive. Bottom: rock and sand. Season: September to February. Consistency: medium. Arrive at dawn on a mid-week swell pulse to find the point at its least competitive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The beach draws surf schools, intermediates, and travelers year-round and gets busy. The point lineup is focused and competitive, with locals who know every rock and won't give up priority easily. Localism is manageable but real: read the pecking order, don't paddle straight to the peak on your first session, and wait your turn.

Access & Facilities

Park in the clifftop car park and walk down. Do not drive the winding access road in a standard vehicle. Showers, a surf shop, lifeguard (peak season), and camping nearby. Aljezur town has another surf shop and supplies. Rips run off the point, use the channel to paddle out and stay aware of bailed boards on the beach.

Nearby Alternatives

When Arrifana is maxed out or too crowded, Amoreira rivermouth to the north offers rights and occasional lefts at lower tide. Carriagem, further north down a dirt track, gives isolated exposed beachbreak that rewards patience on the right swell.
