A rivermouth beach break under a headland on the Algarve's west-facing Costa Vicentina, Amoreira picks up almost every swell going and throws up shifting peaks across a sandy bay with a sand-covered reef toward the north. SW to NW swells are the sweet spot, with easterly winds cleaning things up nicely. Low to mid tide favors a right off the reef end, while the rivermouth section can peel left toward the bay center when the sand stacks correctly. Best from waist-high to overhead: push past that and the currents get serious, the rips thicken, and close-outs become the dominant feature. Intermediates will get the most from it on a clean 3-5ft day. Bottom: sand and sand-covered reef. Season: September through May. Consistency: medium but picks up swell readily. After heavy rain, estuary outflow can compromise water quality, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineuup is relaxed and welcoming. Weekends draw a few more surfers but it rarely gets genuinely crowded. The vibe is chilled, a refreshing contrast to the more competitive spots further south around Sagres. Dawn patrol in autumn gives you the best combination of light crowds and consistent swell.

Access & Facilities

Car park at the northern end of the beach. Lifeguard service operates in season. No surf shops on the beach itself, so bring your own supplies. Water can be affected by estuary runoff after rain events. Watch the rips on the paddle-out, especially at higher stages of the tide.

Nearby Alternatives

If Amoreira is shutting down in onshore slop, Arrifana's right pointbreak to the south offers better wind shelter and a more defined swell window. Carrapateira's Bordeira beach, a short drive north, catches more N wind protection and is worth checking on big NW pulses.
