A long, fast right-hand point that breaks over rocky reef off a remote stretch of Michoacán coast north of Zihuatenejo, The Ranch delivers powerful, walling rides that stretch well beyond 150m on a good swell. It needs size to wake up, generally 6-8ft minimum, and responds best to long-period SW and NW swells with offshore winds holding the face clean. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot before the wave backs off and loses shape. The access situation defines the experience: the realistic approach is hiring a local fishing boat (pancha) from one of the villages north of Zihuatanejo, so come prepared with food, water, and enough cash for the boatman. Despite the all-levels label, beginners should only paddle out if they are genuinely comfortable on fast, heavy reef waves in the 6ft-plus range. When visiting Americans are in the water they tend to guard the peak tightly, so read the lineup before paddling out. Bottom: rocky reef. Season: May to October. Consistency: swell-dependent but empty most days.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday and weekend crowd levels both register as empty, which is a direct function of the boat-access barrier. When surfers are present, they skew toward experienced American travelers who protect the peak assertively. Paddle out with respect, wait your turn, and do not snake. The isolation cuts both ways: you may score it solo, or you may find a tight, territorial group that makes it feel smaller than it is.

Access & Facilities

The standard approach is a hired pancha from a fishing village north of Zihuatanejo. Negotiate the rate before departure and confirm a pickup time. There are no beach facilities, shops, or shade structures on site. Pack all food, water, and sun protection for the session. Rocky reef and powerful surf mean a solid leash and reef-aware footwork are non-negotiable.

Nearby Alternatives

Zihuatanejo and the breaks closer to town offer more accessible options when The Ranch is maxing out or the boat logistics are not worth the effort. Smaller, mellower beach peaks north of Zihuat can absorb the same swell at a friendlier size for a wind-down session.
