Fast, powerful beach-break peaks define La Barrita, a short but punchy stretch of coast along Michoacán's Highway 200 corridor between Zihuatanejo and Acapulco. It picks up SW and NW groundswells out of the Pacific, starts showing shape around 3-5ft, and can hold faces well overhead and beyond when larger swells arrive. Offshore winds out of the NE clean things up, and the break handles all tides without going completely flat. Crowds stay manageable on weekdays, but weekends bring a noticeable increase in surfers, so early sessions are your best move. Bottom: sand over beach. Season: primary groundswell windows fall in the dry season, roughly November through April, with occasional summer south swell activity. Consistency: moderate to good during peak months. The runs stay short under 50m even on the best days, so pick your peaks carefully and be ready to sprint back out through the shore dump.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays here are genuinely quiet with only a handful of surfers in the lineup. Weekends flip the script, particularly when swell is running, and the tight, short-wave nature of the break means the peak gets competitive fast. Respect the locals who are here every week and keep your drop-in instincts in check on the busier days.

Access & Facilities

The spot sits along Federal Highway 200, roughly 15 miles past Petatlán heading south toward Acapulco. Roadside restaurants nearby make refuelling easy. No formal surf facilities on site, so bring your own water and supplies. Watch for rocks visible in the water near the break, and be aware that shore dump can be abrupt on the bigger swells.

Nearby Alternatives

Zihuatanejo, about 45 minutes north, offers more sheltered bay options including Playa Las Gatas and Playa La Ropa for smaller days or when beach-break chop is messy. The broader Guerrero coast holds additional beach and point setups that pick up the same groundswells when La Barrita is maxing out.
