A finicky left pointbreak on the Michoacán coast that only shows its teeth once or twice a year, Barra de Potosí needs a massive swell to wrap around the point and peel into anything worth paddling for. When it does fire, the left can run 200-500m down the point, but the required swell window is wide (S to NW) and the size threshold is high enough that most trips here will be a waiting game. The rivermouth estuary adds a pollution concern, and the surrounding rivermouth produces some secondary peaks plus a right pointbreak, neither of which inspires much confidence. Expert surfers chasing that rare left will want a step-up for the overhead-plus conditions this spot demands. Bottom: point. Season: rare, swell-dependent. Consistency: low. Come with a full quiver and zero expectations, because this one rewards patience and punishes the impatient.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Consistency is so low that the lineup is almost always empty. When a swell does materialize and this spot actually fires, expect a small but capable crew to appear. The remoteness and lack of facilities naturally keeps the crowds thin.

Access & Facilities

No parking or facilities on site. The estuary and rivermouth proximity means pollution is a real concern after rain. Pack water, food, and wax before arriving. The area is remote enough that self-sufficiency is non-negotiable.

Nearby Alternatives

When Barra de Potosí isn't working, the beachbreak peaks at Playa Boca Chica offer more consistent surf year-round. Loma Bonita to the south produces powerful beach and reef peaks with barreling potential in E winds and W swell, and Ixtapa's Playa Linda rivermouth can generate long left walls when conditions align.
