Once counted among the planet's finest right-hand barrels, Petacalco took a heavy blow when port expansion at neighboring Lázaro Cárdenas wrecked its sandbar and turned the wave into a closeout machine. It has clawed its way back and now offers legitimate, powerful surf on the right swell, though inconsistency remains the honest reality. Best on due S swells, it also responds to large NW pulses, delivering intense right-hand barrels over a submerged reef with some serious grunt at any size. Expert surfers only: the wave is powerful from 4ft upward and close-outs are still the norm when the sandbar is off. Industrial pollution from the port, rivermouth, and surrounding factories is a real concern and should factor into your decision to paddle out. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: S swells peak May to October, large NW pulses November to March. Consistency: medium. Bring a step-up and check the sandbar shape before committing.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds show up sometimes when conditions look promising, but the industrial setting and pollution keep casual visitors away. Expert-level surf and unpredictable shape act as natural filters. Respect any locals who know the sandbar best.

Access & Facilities

No parking or facilities on site. The wave sits adjacent to the industrial port of Lázaro Cárdenas, which provides context for both the pollution levels and the access difficulty. Water quality is poor due to rivermouth runoff, port activity, and factory discharge. Factor this in seriously.

Nearby Alternatives

When Petacalco is closing out or the pollution is off-putting, Lázaro Cárdenas has a dozen jetties and the El Faro break that can produce surf. Further north, El Capire and The Ranch offer right-hand setups in a significantly more natural environment.
