One of Mexico's best lefts fires here when a solid S or SW swell hits the cobblestone rivermouth fan at the southern end of Michoacán. SSE through SW is the sweet spot, but Nexpa opens up to W and even NW swells when the sandbar is right. NE or N wind keeps it clean. Best from chest-high to double overhead, with rides stretching 150-300m on a normal day and up to 500m when sections link. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most from it, though the lineup gets thick when it's pumping. Bottom: cobblestone, large rocks, some sand. Season: April-September peaks, rideable year-round. Consistency: reliable when the sandbar hasn't been blown out by summer rains. By late summer the river runoff can wreck the bar, so time your trip for late spring or early summer before the heavy wet season sets in.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a crowd whenever it's good, weekday or weekend. The local crew charges hard and the vibe is manageable but not casual. Respect priority, don't drop in, and conduct yourself as a visitor. Dawn patrol sessions help, but this is not a quiet break.

Access & Facilities

Nearest city is Lázaro Cárdenas. From there, take a minibus toward Caleta de Campos (roughly 1 hour), then a short local ride to the rivermouth. Caleta de Campos has the closest shops and supplies. At the break you'll find cabañas, camping, and food options, though costs have crept up as the place has grown. Water quality is rated fair due to constant river flow, heavier in summer.

Nearby Alternatives

When Nexpa's bar is blown out or the swell is too small, the beach break south of the rivermouth can offer workable peaks. The broader Michoacán coastline has additional points and beachbreaks within driving distance that pick up similar SW and S swell.
