A long stretch of west-facing beachbreak on the southern tip of Île d'Oléron, Saint Trojan delivers shifting sandbars across a wide open beach that rarely gets genuinely crowded outside summer. Offshore easterlies are non-negotiable here: any other wind direction and the session is over before it starts. Optimal in SW to NW swell from 2-6ft, with the sandbar near the WWII shipwreck throwing up the fastest, most hollow peaks when size pushes past head-high. Intermediate surfers will find the most reward, the paddle-out gets work once swell hits head-high and the rip currents are real, especially on a dropping tide. Bottom: sand. Season: May through October, with off-season windows year-round. Consistency: medium. Lifeguards patrol late June to mid-September, check in with them on arrival as most are surfers and will give you an honest read on current danger.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is essentially absent here. Summer weekends bring Parisian day-trippers to the beach itself, and the shipwreck peak gets a predictable cluster of bodyboarders and shortboarders when conditions are good. Off-season, you will likely share the lineup with almost nobody. For a quieter session even in summer, walk or paddle away from the main access.

Access & Facilities

Cross the Oléron bridge, follow signs toward Saint Trojan les Bains, then toward La Grande Plage through the pine forest. A carpark and camping are available. Rip currents can run very strong on a dropping tide, the same baïne-style hazard common across SW France beachbreaks. Do not paddle far from safe exit points if the current builds.

Nearby Alternatives

When Saint Trojan is onshore or flat, the west coast of Oléron offers multiple beachbreak peaks across 15km of coastline that share the same swell and wind exposure. The Maumusson point area to the south has additional sandbars with almost no crowd, though currents there are significantly stronger and the remoteness is a genuine safety factor.
