A punchy submerged reef setup on the Vendée coast, Sauveterre delivers short, hollow right-handers off fingers of reef with beach peaks filling the gaps between sets. It needs SW to NW swell to light up, works best with a NE offshore wind, and handles a wide size range from under 1ft through to 8ft-plus before it starts to blow out. This is an intermediate wave: the reef sections reward surfers who can read fast-breaking peaks, and weekend crowds can make the lineup competitive. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: high. Weevers (vive fish) have been reported in the sand flats here, so wetsuit booties are strongly recommended even in milder months, both for protection and for navigating the rocky sections on the way in and out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw real crowds from surrounding towns, and the lineup can get competitive when swell is running. Weekday dawn patrol sessions are the obvious move. Local surfers have been in the water here for years and expect standard respect protocols: wait your turn, don't snake, don't drop in.

Access & Facilities

Car park on site, but no facilities, so bring water and food. The sand flats between the car park and the water can harbour weever fish, especially in summer and early autumn. Wetsuit booties are not optional here. La Sauzaie is a few kilometres to the south and worth checking if Sauveterre is too crowded or not working.

Nearby Alternatives

La Sauzaie to the south is the most obvious fallback, with its own reef options and generally similar swell window. When a big storm is running, the Olonne Woods area a short drive north hides exposed beachbreak peaks with reef options including longer right-handers that can handle real size.
