A seaweed-covered submerged reef just north of Brétignolles-sur-Mer delivers hollow, fast-breaking A-frames that consistently punch above the size of every surrounding beachbreak. SW to NW swells between 3-8ft are the sweet spot, with a NE offshore wind cleaning things up and mid-to-high tide keeping the shallower sections honest. The lineup is competitive on any given day and the shallow reef demands respect, so intermediate surfers coming here fresh should read a few sets from the clifftop before committing. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: autumn and spring are prime. Consistency: high, starts firing under 1m and holds past 3m. Arrive weekday mornings in May, June, September, or October to find the crowd at its thinnest and the vibe more manageable. The yellow La Sauzaie buoy and the tall Polynesian-style totem Le Motaï by artist Manou are the landmarks.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is a regular contest site and the crowd reflects that energy. Weekends and school holidays bring a full, competitive lineup with longboarders keen to maximise wave count. Locals can be protective of good sets. If the crowd dynamic is unfamiliar, a session at neighbouring peaks first makes sense.

Access & Facilities

From Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie take the D38bis then D38 toward Brétignolles-sur-Mer. The carpark sits directly behind the beach with the distinctive yellow-and-black La Sauzaie buoy visible from the lot. A rescue station operates in summer. Camping is available nearby. Stormwater runoff affects water quality after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Sauzaie is maxed out or the crowd unbearable, the beachbreaks immediately south toward Les Sables-d'Olonne offer more room and shelter in stormy conditions. The Olonne Woods area to the south also hides an exposed beachbreak with two reef setups featuring long rights worth investigating.
