Sandbar peaks at the base of the Coubre lighthouse, on the Atlantic Charente-Maritime coast between Royan and Pointe de la Coubre, deliver surprisingly long rides when conditions align. Offshore winds blow from the east, while this stretch faces WNW-to-W swell, working from knee-high through double overhead and beyond. At low-to-mid tide the bars organize into defined peaks, high tide flattens the power. Weekdays the beach stays relatively quiet, but weekends draw regional crowds to the main lighthouse car park, which makes a short drive north worth considering. Bottom: sandbar. Season: autumn and winter. Consistency: moderate, highly wind-dependent. The prevailing westerly dominates much of the year, so check the forecast carefully and wait for an easterly window before committing to the drive from Royan.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The main spot under the lighthouse fills quickly on weekends, drawing surfers from Royan and further inland. Localism is moderate. Moving north by 2 to 3 km typically means a fraction of the crowd, but those peaks carry stronger rip currents and should not be surfed solo.

Access & Facilities

From Bordeaux, take the A10 toward Pons, then route to Royan (surf shops and supplies) and continue north through La Palmyre to reach the lighthouse. Small sandy car parks serve the northern stretch. No formal facilities beyond the main beach at Coubre. Rips and shifting currents are the main hazards, especially away from the patrolled zone.

Nearby Alternatives

Rowan's town beaches offer a more sheltered option when swell is small or onshore winds hit the coast. La Palmyre's breaks just to the south fill in a similar swell window and carry more shelter from a NW wind.
