A mellow left-hander tucked beside the new jetty at St-Denis, on the northwest tip of Île de Ré, this wave only comes alive when a solid W or NW swell wraps around the island. You need size to get it going: swells pushing 3m or more are required to bend enough energy into this sheltered corner. When it does fire, expect long, walled lefts with forgiving shape, best from mid to high tide before the wave loses structure as the water drops. SW offshores groom the face and the ride can stretch 50-100m before fading. It suits beginners and improvers looking for time on their feet rather than critical sections, though the lineup fills quickly when conditions align since working days are infrequent. Bottom: point over rock. Season: autumn through winter. Consistency: low. A longer board or a mid-length will help you make the most of those drawn-out walls when the swell finally arrives.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Consistency is low, so when St-Denis does switch on it draws a crowd quickly. The beginner-friendly nature of the wave means a mixed lineup of learners and locals. Patience in the water and awareness of right of way on the left goes a long way here.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits close to the break. There are no facilities on site, so bring water and food. The new jetty is a navigational landmark for the paddle-out. No significant pollution or hazard concerns are flagged, though the rocky shelf is worth checking at lower stages of the tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When St-Denis is too small or the swell direction is off, the west-facing beachbreaks of Ré's Atlantic coast handle a wider swell window and offer more consistent peaks. Trois Pierres offers a punchier, hollower option when a strong W swell is running.
